Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios are gearing up to expand the Blue Beetle universe with a new animated series. Sources close to the production have revealed that the project, which has been in development since early this year, will be helmed by Miguel Puga, known for his work on “The Casagrandes.” Puga will serve as both the showrunner and director, while Cristian Martinez, celebrated for his contributions to “Women of the Movement” and “Good Trouble,” will take on the role of writer.

The series will see Angel Manuel Soto and Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, director and screenwriter of the 2023 “Blue Beetle” film, respectively, returning as executive producers. They will be joined by John Ricard, who also served as an executive producer on the film. Overseeing the project for DC Studios will be Galen Vaisman, another key figure from the film’s production team.
While many details are still under wraps, including the cast, it is understood that several actors from the film have been approached and are positively inclined towards returning. The animated series will diverge from the movie’s storyline, offering a fresh narrative while building on the established universe. This new direction holds the potential to bring Blue Beetle back to the big screen in future ventures.
The “Blue Beetle” film, which premiered in 2023, introduced audiences to Jaime Reyes, the third incarnation of the Blue Beetle character. Created by Charles Wojtkowski for Fox Comics in 1939, Jaime Reyes first appeared in his iconic high-tech alien armor in 2006. Portrayed by Xolo Maridueña, Jaime is depicted as a recent college graduate who stumbles upon an alien scarab, granting him extraordinary powers and thrusting him into a battle against the malevolent forces of Kord Industries.
The film’s cast included notable names such as Belissa Escobedo, Susan Sarandon, Bruna Marquezine, George Lopez, Adrianna Barraza, Damián Alcázar, Elpidia Carrillo, Harvey Guillén, Raoul Trujillo, and Becky G, who provided the voice for Khaji-Da, the AI behind Jaime’s Blue Beetle suit.
Fans of Blue Beetle can look forward to this animated series, which promises to deliver new adventures and expand on the beloved character’s lore. Stay tuned to Geek Freaks for more updates on this exciting development.
