The latest entry in the Star Wars universe, The Acolyte, has set a new record for Disney+, becoming the most-watched launch of a Disney+ show in 2024. Disney has announced that the two-episode series premiere attracted a staggering 4.8 million views within 24 hours. This impressive figure surpasses other notable 2024 premieres, such as X-Men ’97, by a significant margin.

This milestone is promising for both Disney and Lucasfilm, especially given the substantial investment in the Star Wars prequel series. Reportedly, The Acolyte boasts the highest production budget of any Star Wars series to date, with costs estimated at $22.5 million per episode.

A Fresh Take on the Star Wars Universe

Set in an era long before the prequel trilogy, The Acolyte dives into a period of peace and prosperity for the Jedi, following their alleged eradication of the Sith. However, this seemingly utopian society harbors a dark secret. The series follows a dark side acolyte named Mae (Amandla Stenberg) and her mysterious master as they target prominent Jedi across the galaxy. This intriguing murder mystery has garnered positive reviews from critics, although it has also faced some review bombing.

What’s Next for Disney+ in 2024?

The record-breaking premiere of The Acolyte kicks off what appears to be a quieter month for Disney+. However, several highly anticipated projects are lined up for the rest of the year.

Among them is Jon Watt’s Skeleton Crew, another live-action Star Wars series set during the New Republic era, between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. The series focuses on a group of children stranded in space, struggling to survive. While a specific release date has not been confirmed, the show is expected to debut in 2024, with a potential delay to 2025.

Additionally, Marvel fans can look forward to Agatha All Along, a spin-off from WandaVision. Starring Kathryn Hahn as the troublesome witch Agatha, the series will explore her reunion with her old coven. Whether she remains a sadistic foe or becomes a more approachable magic-user is yet to be seen. Agatha All Along is scheduled to premiere in September.

With The Acolyte leading the charge, Disney+ is poised for an exciting year, promising more thrilling content for both Star Wars and Marvel fans alike.
