It’s official: the Shelby family is making a triumphant return to the screen. After years of anticipation and unconfirmed rumors, Netflix has finally greenlit a feature film for the beloved series, Peaky Blinders. Oscar winner Cillian Murphy will reprise his iconic role as Tommy Shelby, the formidable leader of the Birmingham clan.

The untitled film will be directed by Tom Harper, known for his work on Heart of Stone, The Aeronauts, and War & Peace. Harper is no stranger to the world of Peaky Blinders, having directed the latter half of Season 1. Production is set to commence later this year, with a script penned by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight.

The production team boasts an impressive lineup, with Caryn Mandabach, Knight, Murphy, and Guy Heeley producing. Executive producers include Harper, David Kosse, Jamie Glazebrook, Andrew Warren, and David Mason. The film will be made in association with BBC Film.

Knight had hinted at the movie’s progress earlier this year, but this marks the first official confirmation with Netflix’s backing. While plot details and additional casting are still under wraps, Knight previously suggested that the film’s story would be set during World War II.

Murphy expressed his excitement to Deadline, saying, “It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me. … It is very gratifying to be recollaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders. This is one for the fans.”

Harper echoed Murphy’s sentiment, reflecting on his early days with the series: “When I first directed Peaky Blinders over 10 years ago, we didn’t know what the series would become, but we did know that there was something in the alchemy of the cast and the writing that felt explosive. Peaky has always been a story about family — and so it’s incredibly exciting to be reuniting with Steve and Cillian to bring the movie to audiences across the world on Netflix.”

Knight added, “I’m genuinely thrilled that this movie is about to happen. It will be an explosive chapter in the Peaky Blinders story. No holds barred. Full-on Peaky Blinders at war.”

Peaky Blinders debuted in 2013 on BBC Two in the UK, with Netflix joining in 2014. The series transitioned to BBC One in 2019, following its BAFTA win for Best Drama. Over six seasons, the show captivated audiences worldwide, concluding in 2022 with Tommy Shelby riding off into the sunset after settling numerous scores and passing the family business to his sister Ada.

Since the series finale, Murphy has continued to make waves in the film industry. He recently won the Best Actor Academy Award for his role in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and starred in Small Things Like These, which opened this year’s Berlin Film Festival. Additionally, Murphy has launched his production company, Big Things Films, with Alan Moloney. He is currently shooting Steve, based on the book Shy by Max Porter, for Netflix.

With the Peaky Blinders movie now officially in the works, fans can look forward to another thrilling chapter in the saga of the Shelby family.
