Max has officially announced that Bill Skarsgård will reprise his iconic role as Pennywise the Clown in the upcoming It prequel series, “Welcome to Derry.” Skarsgård, who first terrified audiences in the 2017 adaptation of Stephen King’s It and its 2019 sequel, It Chapter Two, is also set to serve as an executive producer on the series.
Reuniting with Skarsgård are Andy Muschietti, the director of both It films, along with producer Barbara Muschietti and co-producer Jason Fuchs. This collaboration promises to deliver a chilling expansion of the It universe, with big scares tailored for the small screen.

Skarsgård’s return to the role comes after he confirmed in March last year that he was “not involved” with the prequel. However, it seems the allure of Pennywise was too strong to resist, and he has since signed on to bring the flame-haired clown back to life. Although the series has been in development since 2022, details remain scarce. Even the working title, “Welcome to Derry,” is subject to change.
The prequel series will consist of nine episodes, with Andy Muschietti directing four of them. He, along with Skarsgård, Barbara Muschietti, Jason Fuchs, Brad Caleb Kane, David Coatsworth, Shelley Meals, Roy Lee, and Dan Lin, will serve as executive producers. Fuchs, who penned the screenplay for the first episode, will also co-showrun the series alongside Kane.
“Welcome to Derry” aims to delve deeper into the lore of Stephen King’s It, providing fans with new thrills and expanding on the terrifying world that has captivated audiences for years. With Skarsgård back as Pennywise, viewers can expect a hauntingly familiar yet fresh narrative.
Stay tuned for more updates as we get closer to the series premiere!
