In an exciting development for fans of the hit series “Shōgun,” FX and Hulu have officially announced their plans to extend the show beyond its initial run. Working closely with the Estate of author James Clavell, the creators are set to bring two additional seasons to the screen, though this plan could be subject to creative changes.

The series, which stars Hiroyuki Sanada as Lord Yoshii Toranaga, has captured audiences worldwide, becoming FX’s most-watched show ever based on global hours streamed within just nine weeks of its premiere. The show has also been lauded by critics, solidifying its place as a standout series in recent television history.

Key creatives including showrunner and co-creator Justin Marks, co-creator Rachel Kondo, and executive producer Michaela Clavell are returning for the new seasons. Production timelines are still in the works, but a writers’ room will be assembled and begin this summer.

Interestingly, “Shōgun” was initially billed as a limited series, with Marks previously stating that the story concluded with the end of the book. However, the show’s immense success has paved the way for its continuation. Sanada’s recent deal to return for a second season further fueled speculation about the series’ future.

The renewal does come with some implications for awards season. Initially poised to compete in the limited series category, “Shōgun” will now run as a drama series, as reported by Deadline. This shift adds an intriguing layer of competition for the upcoming Emmys.

Fans of “Shōgun” can look forward to more of the captivating storytelling and rich historical drama that has defined the series, with the promise of even more intricate plots and character developments in the seasons to come.
