Warner Bros. has excited Tolkien fans worldwide by announcing a new chapter in the “Lord of the Rings” saga, set to premiere in 2026. The film, titled “Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum,” will see Andy Serkis return not only in his iconic role as Gollum but also as the director of the project. The announcement was made by Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav during a recent earnings call.

Peter Jackson and his longstanding collaborators Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens are set to produce the film. The trio, renowned for their work on the original “Lord of the Rings” trilogy and the subsequent “Hobbit” series, have committed to being “involved every step of the way.” The script is currently being developed by Walsh, Boyens, Phoebe Gittins, and Arty Papageorgiou, promising to explore new storylines within the beloved Middle-earth.
This ambitious project was first hinted at in February 2023 when studio leaders Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy announced a deal through WB label New Line Cinema to create multiple films based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s works. This deal, made possible by Freemode and Middle-earth Enterprises, also includes a separate animated feature, “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim,” scheduled for release in December.
Jackson, Walsh, and Boyens expressed their excitement about returning to Middle-earth and working with Serkis, whom they referred to affectionately as having “unfinished business” with his character, Gollum. Their statement highlighted a deep reverence for Tolkien’s world, promising to honor his legacy in this new venture.
The original “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, also directed by Jackson, was a monumental success, grossing nearly $3 billion worldwide and winning 17 Academy Awards, including Best Picture for “The Return of the King.” Fans and critics alike are eager to see how the new films will add to this legendary cinematic legacy.
