Nintendo’s President Shuntaro Furukawa has confirmed that the company’s next video game console will indeed be a follow-up to the highly popular Nintendo Switch. This confirmation came during a call following the release of Nintendo’s latest financial results, where Furukawa referred to the upcoming device as the “next model” of the Switch, a tacit acknowledgment of what many had suspected but not heard directly from the company: the development of a “Nintendo Switch 2.”

Despite the excitement surrounding this revelation, details about the new console remain sparse. Furukawa did not delve into specifics regarding the features or enhancements fans can expect. However, he did note that the unveiling of the console is slated to occur before the end of the current fiscal year, which concludes in March 2025. Notably, this reveal is not expected to happen during the upcoming Nintendo Direct in June 2024, which will instead focus on new game titles for the existing Switch model.
The confirmation of the new console’s development comes amidst a bustling final year for the original Switch. Nintendo has lined up several major releases, including “Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door” later this month and “Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD” in June. The much-anticipated “Metroid Prime 4” remains the last major exclusive yet to be released, with no updates on its development since a reset in 2019.
As Nintendo prepares to transition to its next generation of hardware, fans and industry observers alike will be eagerly watching for any hints or announcements regarding what could be one of the most anticipated launches in the company’s history.
