Nearly three decades after Adam Sandler swung his way into the hearts of millions with the hit golf comedy “Happy Gilmore,” buzz around a sequel has finally surfaced. Christopher McDonald, renowned for his role as the unforgettable antagonist Shooter McGavin, revealed during an interview on Audacy’s 92.3 (as reported by Deadline) that a sequel script is indeed in the pipeline.

The revelation came when McDonald recounted a recent encounter with Adam Sandler. “I saw Adam about two weeks ago, and he says to me, ‘McDonald, you’re gonna love this,’” McDonald shared. “‘How about that,’ he says, and shows me the first draft of Happy Gilmore 2.” This encounter not only confirms the ongoing development of the sequel but also showcases the enthusiasm from the original cast about revisiting the iconic storyline.

Despite McDonald’s initial hesitance about making the news public—fearing he might “be a liar” if plans fell through—he couldn’t contain his excitement for the project, emphasizing the strong fan demand for a sequel. “He did show me that [script], and I thought, ‘Well, that would be awesome.’ So, it’s in the works. Fans demand it, dammit!”

According to Deadline‘s sources, if “Happy Gilmore 2” moves forward, it will likely do so under the banner of Netflix, through a collaboration between Sandler and Happy Madison Productions. While details about the production timeline remain scarce, McDonald’s comments provide a glimmer of hope to fans eagerly awaiting the return of one of the most quotable comedies of the 1990s.

The original “Happy Gilmore” movie, released in 1996, starred Adam Sandler as the eponymous character, a former hockey player with an unconventional golfing technique that leads him to success in the golfing world. The film is cherished for its humor, unique characters, and memorable cameos, including appearances by Julia Bowen, Kevin Nealon, Ben Stiller, and the late Carl Weathers, as well as a memorable scene with Bob Barker.

As we anticipate further updates on “Happy Gilmore 2,” fans of the original film can look back on the beloved classic that topped our list of Sandler’s best films. Stay tuned for more news on this exciting development in the world of comedy cinema.
