The Beloved Manga Classic is Set for a Hollywood Debut
In an exciting development for fans of the iconic manga series “Naruto,” Lionsgate has announced a live-action adaptation of the beloved story, with Destin Daniel Cretton at the helm. Cretton, renowned for directing the Marvel Studios hit “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” will not only direct but also co-write and produce the adaptation through his company, Hisako, alongside Jeyun Munford. The project will also see collaboration with seasoned producers Avi Arad, Ari Arad, and Emmy Yu of Arad Productions, and Jeremy Latcham.

“Naruto,” created by Masashi Kishimoto, has been a cornerstone of manga and anime culture since its serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump from 1999 to 2014. Following the journey of Naruto Uzumaki, a young ninja with dreams of becoming the leader of his village and the secret burden of harboring a powerful demon fox spirit, the series captured the hearts of millions worldwide. Its widespread popularity is evident in the over 250 million copies of the manga sold globally, alongside a successful run of animated series and a strong presence in merchandising and video games.
The adaptation, which has been in the pipeline since late 2015, marks a significant step forward with Cretton’s involvement. Hisako Kishimoto, the creator of “Naruto,” has given his blessing to Cretton, expressing confidence in his direction and storytelling capabilities, particularly in drama, which is seen as a perfect fit for bringing the depth of “Naruto’s” narrative to life.
Adam Fogelson, chair of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, echoed the sentiment of anticipation and confidence in the project. He emphasized the global love for the “Naruto” series and the excitement for Cretton’s vision, which promises to engage long-time fans and newcomers alike.
Cretton’s attachment to “Naruto” adds to his impressive portfolio, which includes critically acclaimed films such as “Short Term 12” and “Just Mercy,” and his current work on the sequel to “Shang-Chi” and the Disney+ adaptation of “American Born Chinese.”
As the “Naruto” live-action adaptation moves forward, it represents a bridge between cultures, storytelling forms, and entertainment mediums, promising to bring a new dimension to the cherished story of Naruto Uzumaki and his quest for recognition and leadership.
