In a landscape where major gaming studios like Xbox and PlayStation are aggressively pursuing acquisitions, CD Projekt Red, the acclaimed developer behind Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher series, stands firm on remaining independent. Adam Kiciński, Chief Strategy Officer of parent company CD Projekt S.A., emphasized the company’s commitment to its independent status in a statement to Polish outlet Parkiet.

Expansion Over Acquisition

The studio’s confidence in its independent trajectory is bolstered by its expansion into North America, with CD Projekt Red North America encompassing teams in Vancouver and a new studio being established in Boston. These teams are set to focus on the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel, codenamed Orion, diverging from the studio’s work in Poland on the next mainline Witcher game, codenamed Polaris.

CD Projekt’s strategy also includes nurturing The Molasses Flood, another studio under its wing, which remains autonomous as it develops a multiplayer Witcher game, codenamed Sirius. This approach contrasts sharply with the recent trend of big players like Xbox, which notably acquired Activision Blizzard in 2023, marking a significant event in the gaming industry’s ongoing acquisition race.
