TLDR: James Gunn confirms that Matt Reeves is producing an Arkham series set in the new DC Universe, expanding The Batman universe.

In a recent social media exchange, DC Studios co-head James Gunn has confirmed that filmmaker Matt Reeves is not just expanding his “The Batman” universe but is also actively involved in developing a new series within the freshly envisioned DC Universe.

Reeves’ Role in the Expanding Batverse

Reeves, known for his remarkable work on “The Batman,” is now producing an Arkham series that will be part of the new world being shaped by Gunn and his counterpart Peter Safran. This announcement came as a response to fan queries on Threads, where Gunn was asked about Reeves’ involvement in projects beyond “The Batman: Part II,” the Penguin series, and the newly confirmed Arkham series.

James Gunn, answering the fan’s question, stated, “Right now Matt is producing Arkham as a DCU series, so there’s just the two for now,” thereby confirming the Arkham series’s production under Reeves’ guidance.

Clarifications on the Arkham Series and Its Place in the DCU

Further inquiries from fans brought clarity about the Arkham series’s positioning within the new DC Universe, which Gunn and Safran have titled “Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.” Gunn expressed his enthusiasm for working with Reeves, mentioning, “We love Matt as a director and producer so he’ll be producing stories both within his The Batman universe and within the DCU.”

Gunn also clarified that the Arkham series was always intended to be a part of the DCU, distinguishing it from Elseworlds projects like Reeves’ “The Batman” and Todd Phillips’ “Joker: Folie à Deux.” He noted, “It was one of the first pitches we bought when Peter and I came on board. I don’t know the permutations it went through before that time.”

The Significance of Arkham in the Batman Universe

In the Batman lore, Arkham refers to the infamous Arkham Asylum, a psychiatric hospital/prison notorious for housing some of Batman’s most dangerous adversaries. The setting’s rich and dark history provides a fertile ground for storytelling, making it an exciting addition to the expanding DC Universe.

This development signifies a promising future for DC fans, blending the distinct visions of Reeves and Gunn to create a cohesive and engaging cinematic experience
