In an unexpected turn of events, “The Walking Dead” creator Robert Kirkman inadvertently revealed Steven Yeun’s role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. During a conversation with comic artist David Finch, Kirkman disclosed that Yeun would be portraying The Sentry in an upcoming film. This revelation was not an official announcement, but given Kirkman’s close ties with Yeun, it’s believed to be accurate. Kirkman mentioned he had spoken with Yeun about a costume fitting for The Sentry, humorously noting the character’s yellow and blue costume, which coincidentally matches Yeun’s superhero character in Kirkman’s “Invincible” series.

The character of The Sentry, also known as Robert Reynolds, was created by Paul Jenkins and Jae Lee. He is one of the most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe, with abilities like superhuman strength, speed, flight, and energy projection, drawing power from a million exploding suns. Despite these incredible powers, Sentry’s most notable feature is his psychological complexity, particularly his dissociative identity disorder. He harbors a dark alter ego known as “The Void,” representing his fears and destructive tendencies. The Void is as powerful as Sentry and symbolizes the antithesis of his heroic persona.
In the “Thunderbolts” movie, Sentry is said to be a part of Val’s team for the first two acts before an unspecified event takes him away. The nature of Sentry’s role in the film, whether as a hero or a potential villain consumed by the Void, remains a fascinating aspect of his character arc. This internal conflict of heroism versus villainy aligns with the broader narrative trajectory of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as it heads towards major events like “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty” and “Avengers: Secret Wars.”
“Thunderbolts” distinguishes itself from typical MCU films by featuring a team composed of ex-villains and anti-heroes, assembled by CIA director Contessa Valentina Allegra De La Fontaine. Characters like Bucky Barnes, Red Guardian, and Yelena Belova, who lack a solid allegiance to any specific cause, lead the team. The film is slated for release on December 20, 2024, and Yeun’s role as The Sentry is anticipated to be significant within the Thunderbolts storyline and potentially in future MCU projects.
