Recent developments suggest a significant shift in Marvel Studios’ storytelling direction, moving away from the Kang storyline, which has been a central element in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s (MCU) recent phase.
According to Vanity Fair reporter Joanna Robinson, “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” screenwriter Jeff Loveness is not involved in writing the upcoming “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.” This change indicates Marvel’s likely move away from the Kang storyline, a narrative thread weaving through both seasons of the Disney+ series “Loki” and the Ant-Man threequel. It also impacts future installments of the Multiverse Saga, including “Kang Dynasty” and “Avengers: Secret Wars”.
“Quantumania” launched Phase 5 of the MCU, introducing Jonathan Majors’ Kang the Conqueror as a multiversal variant of He Who Remains. This character played a pivotal role in the timelines controlled in “Loki”. The TV series’ season 2 finale featured Loki replacing He Who Remains at the End of Time, impacting the multiverse’s structure.
The shift from Kang’s storyline could be partly attributed to Majors’ recent legal issues. Marvel reportedly considered recasting the character or introducing a different major villain like Doctor Doom due to the uncertainties surrounding Majors’ availability.
“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” and “Loki” season 1 writer Michael Waldron is set to write “Avengers: Secret Wars,” concluding Phase 6 of the MCU and the Multiverse Saga. This series has hinted at a potential reality-destroying multiversal war.
In line with these changes, Disney has reshuffled its Marvel Studios slate, adjusting release dates for several upcoming projects, including “Deadpool 3,” “Captain America: Brave New World,” “Thunderbolts,” and the “Blade” reboot. “The Kang Dynasty” and “Secret Wars” have also seen their release dates moved to May 1, 2026, and May 7, 2027, respectively.
