Marvel’s Blade reboot, featuring multi-Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali, is at the center of an eye-opening report from Variety’s Tatiana Siegel, revealing a tumultuous pre-production journey and significant changes in direction for the film.

A Shift in Focus

Originally, the Blade reboot was taking an unexpected path, with the story reportedly morphing into a female-led narrative, pushing Blade to the fourth lead. This aligns with Marvel’s promotion of “Bloodline: Daughter of Blade” in their comics. However, the project has undergone multiple revisions, facing disruptions from changes in writers, directors, and even a temporary shutdown.
Oscar-nominated writer Michael Green, known for his work on “Logan,” has been brought on to rewrite the script from scratch. Marvel Studios seems to be adopting a new approach, reportedly aiming to produce the film on a budget of less than $100 million.
Budget and Genre Considerations
The original Blade movie in 1998, made on a modest budget of $45 million, grossed $131.2 million. This success suggests that a lower budget doesn’t hinder quality. Given Blade’s horror themes, a genre known for successful low-budget films, Marvel’s decision to cut costs appears strategically sound.
