The Future of Avengers: Possible Resurrection of Iconic Heroes
The End of an Era
The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) witnessed the departure of two foundational characters in 2019. Avengers: Endgame saw the poignant exits of Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), sacrificing themselves to restore half of the universe. While Johansson reprised her role in the 2021 prequel Black Widow, Downey has not been involved with Marvel Studios since his touching farewell line, “I love you 3000.”
A Glimmer of Hope in the Multiverse
However, the exploration of the multiverse in the MCU has sparked speculation about the potential return of these beloved characters. A recent report from Variety suggests that Marvel Studios is contemplating a reunion of “the original gang” in a future Avengers movie. This reunion could include the revival of Downey’s Iron Man and Johansson’s Black Widow, whether through variants or a literal resurrection.
Uncertainty Surrounding Captain America
Chris Evans’s Captain America, another member of the original Avengers, remains an enigma in these discussions. Unlike Stark and Romanoff, Steve Rogers aged significantly but was still alive at the end of Endgame.
Financial Considerations
A significant challenge to this idea is the cost. Both Downey and Johansson command high salaries, with Downey having earned approximately $25 million for Iron Man 3 (2013). With the MCU’s financial success since then, these figures could be even higher.
Scarlett Johansson’s Continued Involvement
Despite the uncertainty of her on-screen return, Johansson confirmed to ComicBook.com that her Marvel Studios producing project is still in the works, albeit delayed due to current industry strikes.
