Marvel Comics is ushering in 2024 with a significant addition to its lineup: a new volume of Ultimate Spider-Man. With the acclaimed Jonathan Hickman (House of X) at the helm and Marco Checchetto (Daredevil) bringing visuals to life, this release is already generating buzz. However, what really sets this series apart is its focus on an older Peter Parker, who is not only married but also a father.

The Return of Spider-Marriage

More than 15 years after the controversial One More Day storyline, Marvel is revisiting Peter Parker’s marriage to Mary Jane. This move is monumental for long-time Spider-Man fans, particularly those who were disheartened by the dissolution of this iconic relationship.

A New Ultimate Universe

The original Ultimate Universe, spanning from 2000-2015, offered a fresh and contemporary take on Marvel’s characters. The new Ultimate Universe, dubbed Earth-6160, is not a direct continuation but rather another reboot designed to welcome new readers. In this iteration, Peter Parker avoids the spider bite in his teens, only to become Spider-Man in adulthood.

At New York Comic-Con, Marvel announced three pillars of the new Ultimate line: Ultimate Spider-Man, Ultimate Black Panther, and Ultimate X-Men. This version of Peter Parker significantly diverges from his predecessor, portraying him as a mature hero with a family.

Addressing Past Controversies

Peter and MJ’s marriage, originally solidified in 1987’s Amazing Spider-Man Annual #21, ended during One More Day. In a desperate bid to save Aunt May, Peter and MJ strike a deal with Mephisto, sacrificing their marriage and the possibility of their daughter. This storyline has been a sore point among fans, as subsequent comics have shied away from reuniting Peter and MJ.

A Fresh Perspective on Spider-Man

The new Ultimate Spider-Man offers an intriguing twist: exploring Spider-Man as a married father, a narrative explored in alternate universe comics but now brought into the Ultimate realm. Given the popularity of Spider-Man projects featuring Peter and MJ’s committed relationship, this series could signal a shift in Marvel’s editorial direction.
