Marvel Comics, in collaboration with Lucasfilm Publishing, is set to adapt Timothy Zahn’s 2018 novel, Thrawn: Alliances, into a comic book series. The announcement was made at the 2023 New York Comic Con, bringing excitement to Star Wars and Marvel fans alike.
The adaptation will see Timothy Zahn team up with co-writer Jody Houser, who has a proven track record in adapting Zahn’s novels into comics, as evident from the 2018 adaptation of Star Wars: Thrawn. Houser has also been instrumental in the creation of several other Star Wars comic adaptations, including Marvel’s Rogue One.

Thrawn: Alliances is the second book in Zahn’s canon Thrawn trilogy. Set between Seasons 3 and 4 of Star Wars Rebels, the narrative revolves around Emperor Palpatine sending Grand Admiral Thrawn and Darth Vader on a mission to Batuu. The novel reveals Thrawn’s discernment of the secret identity of Anakin Skywalker as Darth Vader.
For old-school fans, Thrawn’s significance lies in his debut in Zahn’s 1991 novel, Heir to the Empire, and his subsequent addition to the modern Star Wars canon. More recently, the character graced the screens in the Disney+ series, Ahsoka, portrayed by Lars Mikkelsen.
While Thrawn: Alliances releases in January 2024, fans also have more to look forward to, as Marvel plans to release a miniseries focusing on Mace Windu and Jango Fett next year.

Celebrating the 25th anniversary of Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, Star Wars: Mace Windu will be penned by Marc Bernardin and sport cover art by Mateus Manhanini. On the other hand, Ethan Sacks, the mastermind behind Star Wars: Bounty Hunters, will helm the series on Star Wars: Jango Fett, which boasts cover art by Leinil Francis Yu.
Both Mace Windu and Jango Fett have significant roles in the Star Wars saga, with their intertwined fates leading to one of the most memorable moments in Attack of the Clones. With this new comic adaptation, fans can anticipate a deeper dive into the lives and legacies of these two characters.
