Greetings, fellow gamers! It’s Scott from Geek Freaks, and today I delve deep into the neon streets of Night City to give you an honest review of the latest DLC for Cyberpunk 2077 – Phantom Liberty.

Value Proposition

Every gamer’s looming question: “Is this DLC worth my money?” If you abide by the principle of expecting an hour of gameplay for every dollar spent, Phantom Liberty undoubtedly surpasses that benchmark. The main mission offers 10-15 hours, and with the addition of side missions, the total gameplay time easily shoots past the 30-hour mark.

Game Quality

Beyond the value, the main question is: “Is the game fun?” CD Projekt Red has definitely poured in the effort to rectify their initial game’s shortcomings. The setting is vividly painted in Dogtown, a unique district of Night City, bringing with it high-adrenaline missions, particularly the intense initial mission of rescuing the president.

The DLC has also leveraged the talents of the iconic Idris Elba, who brings his distinctive charm and gravitas. With him, the DLC embodies elements of James Bond espionage, only with a darker, cyberpunk twist. However, be wary that the storyline may drag a bit in the middle before picking up again.

Game Integration

The DLC feels like an organic extension of the main game, preserving its theme, lore, and overall aura. Dogtown seamlessly integrates into Night City, and Phantom Liberty continues the essence of Cyberpunk.

2.0 Update

This review wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the 2.0 update. While the revamped skill tree allows for more tailored gameplay, it’s the cyberware that takes the limelight, emphasizing the game’s underlying theme. The crafting dynamics have also been adjusted to focus more on gameplay rather than repetitive loops.

Vehicle combat, a new feature in the 2.0 update, felt a tad unnecessary to me. While it’s a novel concept, it doesn’t quite mesh with the soul of Cyberpunk.

Final Thoughts

While it’s impossible to ignore the tumultuous journey Cyberpunk 2077 has undergone since its launch, the current form of the game paired with the Phantom Liberty DLC is nothing short of remarkable. While some might argue we’re only now seeing the game as it should have been at launch, as a gamer, the current experience is rewarding.

If Cyberpunk 2077 had launched as it is today, it would be a surefire 10/10. Given its history, I’d give it a solid 9/10. For those who’ve shelved the game post-launch, it’s high time to revisit Night City.
