Disney Plus, the streaming service that has won hearts worldwide, is gearing up to implement a significant policy change in Canada. Starting November 1, the platform has plans to restrict password sharing among its users, a move aimed at curbing the proliferation of shared accounts beyond a single household.
MobileSyrup was the first to highlight this change when emails began arriving in Canadian subscribers’ inboxes earlier this week. Disney Plus, although not providing explicit details on the enforcement mechanisms, emphasized that sharing would be restricted to members of a single household. But it’s not all tightening reins! The service is also launching a more affordable, ad-supported tier alongside these changes.
The term ‘Household’ is clearly defined in the revised service agreement. It refers to devices associated with one’s primary residence and used by the people living there. This move was somewhat anticipated, especially after Disney CEO Bob Iger hinted at such changes in a Q3 earnings call.
Following in the footsteps of Netflix, which saw revenue growth post its password-sharing restrictions, Disney Plus is optimistic about the outcome of this decision. And with an 8/10 score in our 2023 review, we believe Disney Plus continues to enrich its content palette, despite the ad-free tier seeing a price surge since 2019.
