Nintendo’s recent announcement that there will be no DLC for “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom” has left fans puzzled and somewhat disappointed. Given the tremendous success of the game, the decision is surprising, to say the least.
An Unprecedented Success
“Tears of the Kingdom” achieved a spectacular milestone, selling 18.51 million units within just a month-and-a-half of its release. The game was not only a commercial triumph but also received critical acclaim. This enormous success has surpassed more than half of the total sales of its predecessor, “Breath of the Wild,” which stands at 30.65 million units sold.
The DLC Precedent
The precedent set by “Breath of the Wild,” which received substantial DLC updates including Master Mode, Hero’s Path Mode, trials, and new items, makes this decision all the more baffling. Fans were hopeful for a similar treatment for “Tears of the Kingdom,” but producer Eiji Aonuma made it clear in an interview with Famitsu that they have no plans for any additional content.
Aonuma’s Reasoning
“There are no plans to release additional content this time, but that’s because I feel like we’ve done everything we can to create fun in that world,” Aonuma stated in the interview. While it’s reassuring to know that the developers feel the game is complete as it is, it’s still a hard pill for the community to swallow, given the enormous replay value that DLC can add.
What’s Next?
Interestingly, Aonuma hinted at the possibility of returning to the Hyrule of “Breath of the Wild” and “Tears of the Kingdom” for a potential third game. “If that’s the case, if a new reason arises, we might return to the same world again. Whether it’s a sequel or a new work, I think it’s going to be a completely new game, so I hope you’re looking forward to it,” he said.
The Community’s Reaction
The community is divided. While some appreciate the developer’s desire to deliver a complete, standalone product, others feel that the absence of DLC is a missed opportunity to continue exploring the world they’ve come to love.
Only time will tell if Nintendo’s decision will be a positive or negative one in the grand scheme of things. As for now, we can only look forward to whatever new project they have in store for us in the Zelda universe.
