Spider-Man: No Way Home took the world by storm with its mind-bending multiverse storyline and the return of beloved characters from previous Spider-Man films. Among the most anticipated comebacks was Willem Dafoe’s reprisal of the Green Goblin, the iconic villain from Sam Raimi’s original Spider-Man trilogy. However, fans may be surprised to learn that the Green Goblin almost returned triumphantly in an Iron Man suit.
Concept Art Reveals the Iron Man Upgrade
Concept art from the Spider-Man: No Way Home – The Art of the Movie artbook showcased a radical transformation for the Green Goblin. In these early designs, the villain was depicted wearing an Iron Man suit, merging two formidable foes into one formidable adversary.

In one concept, the Green Goblin was seen riding on one of Mysterio’s drones from Spider-Man: Far From Home, replacing his traditional glider with this advanced mode of transportation. Incorporating the Iron Man Mark VI armor, as seen in Iron Man 2, gave Norman Osborn an extra layer of technological prowess.
Another concept art version portrayed the Iron Man armor painted in the Green Goblin’s signature purple and gold colors. The addition of Iron Man boots and a green-painted drone paid homage to the character’s classic comic book appearance and past movie iterations.

The inclusion of an Iron Man suit for the Green Goblin could have been a subtle nod to Norman Osborn’s complex history in Marvel Comics. In the comics, Norman Osborn briefly assumed the identity of the Iron Patriot, donning a suit with a patriotic color scheme. While this storyline was not explored in the MCU, the concept art might have been a nod to this alternate identity.
Spider-Man: No Way Home presented a wealth of surprises and memorable moments, with Willem Dafoe’s return as the Green Goblin being a definite highlight. While the concept of the villain donning an Iron Man suit was fascinating, the decision to keep the classic Green Goblin look allowed fans to fully immerse themselves in the thrilling clash between good and evil in the Spider-Man multiverse.
