In a recent update on his Not a Blog, renowned author George RR Martin revealed that his overall deal with HBO has been suspended since June 1, due to the ongoing Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike. The strike, which began in May, has put a halt to negotiations between the AMPTP (Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers) and WGA, leaving many writers, including Martin, in a difficult position.

The acclaimed writer, best known for his epic fantasy series “A Song of Ice and Fire,” which served as the basis for the hugely popular TV show “Game of Thrones,” expressed his concerns about the strike and its impact on various members of the industry. Martin emphasized that the strike is not solely about the big names in the industry but rather about supporting entry-level writers, story editors, aspiring students, and others trying to break into the field.

“I still have plenty to do, of course. In that, I am one of the lucky ones.”

Reflecting on his own experience, Martin recounted that he had dreamt of creating his own show in the 80s and empathized with the struggles faced by those who aspire to do the same today. He emphasized the importance of standing united during this challenging time and stressed that the 2023 strike is the most significant of his lifetime.

As the strike continues, the industry remains at a standstill, and negotiations between the AMPTP and WGA are yet to resume. While George RR Martin’s deal with HBO remains in limbo, he remains optimistic that the writers’ unity will eventually lead to positive outcomes for everyone involved.
