James Gunn, known for his work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, is now making his mark on the DC Extended Universe. After securing the talented duo of David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan as Clark Kent and Lois Lane respectively, Gunn is wasting no time in expanding the superhero roster for his upcoming film, Superman: Legacy.

The latest addition to the cast is Anthony Carrigan, who recently earned an Emmy nomination for his exceptional performance in HBO’s hit series Barry. Carrigan has been cast as Metamorpho, the classic DC character also known as Rex Mason. Metamorpho’s story revolves around an archaeologist-turned-hero who gains the ability to transform his body into various elements, granting him incredible powers. Created by Bob Haney and Ramona Fradon in 1965, Metamorpho later becomes a detective and a founding member of the Outsiders, a supergroup.

Gunn’s decision to cast Carrigan is a testament to his love for unconventional and offbeat characters, which he has successfully showcased in his previous works. Known for finding unique ways to highlight such characters, Gunn has a knack for turning them into scene-stealers or emotional cores within his films.

Anthony Carrigan has proven his acting prowess with his standout portrayal of NoHo Hank in HBO’s critically acclaimed dark comedy, Barry. The show has received over 50 Emmy nominations throughout its four seasons, and Carrigan himself has earned three Emmy nominations in the outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series category.

Superman: Legacy, directed and written by James Gunn, is set to release on July 11, 2025. The film will introduce DC’s new universe under the helm of Gunn and his co-boss at DC Studios, Peter Safran. Despite the looming threat of an actors strike by SAG-AFTRA, Gunn is moving forward with his plans, aiming to begin shooting early next year.
