Facebook parent company Meta has revealed Threads, its upcoming Twitter competitor that is set to launch on July 6, 2023.

Threads is positioning itself as a strong contender to Twitter, especially as the latter is experiencing a tumultuous time under the leadership of CEO Elon Musk. Interestingly, Threads will be launched just days after Twitter implemented temporary daily limitations and announced plans to put TweetDeck behind a paywall within a month.

Currently available for pre-order on the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store, Threads has even introduced a fun feature on Instagram to create excitement leading up to its launch. Users can simply search for ‘Threads’ on Instagram, and a red ticket will appear to the right of the search bar.

Clicking on the ticket provides users with a virtual ticket to share. It includes important information such as the launch time of Threads (July 6 at 7 am PT/10 am ET), a countdown, a QR code, and a link for pre-ordering the app, as well as the user’s Instagram name and photo. The ticket also offers a rotating shimmering effect with the Threads logo. According to the official description, Threads aims to be Instagram’s text-based conversation app, where communities can come together to discuss various topics of interest and connect with favorite creators or like-minded individuals.

One of the advantages Threads offers is the ability to retain an Instagram username and find followers immediately as they join the platform.

Many alternatives to Twitter have emerged over time, such as Bluesky and Mastodon, but Threads holds a significant advantage by advertising to its existing user base of over two billion monthly active Instagram users and building upon the platform’s success, as well as leveraging the infrastructure of Facebook.

As Threads prepares for its launch on July 6, the social media landscape is bound to witness an interesting battle for users’ attention and engagement.
