Mattel Films, the production company behind the iconic Barbie franchise, is delving into a new and unexpected territory with its forthcoming Barney film. Executive Kevin McKeon recently revealed in an interview with The New Yorker that the project, produced by and starring Oscar winner Daniel Kaluuya, will be an adult-oriented, “A24-type” endeavor. This decision to take Barney in a more mature direction aligns with Mattel’s commitment to creating art that resonates with audiences beyond childhood nostalgia.
Describing the film as “surrealistic” and drawing inspiration from the works of acclaimed filmmakers Charlie Kaufman and Spike Jonze, McKeon explained that the Barney movie will tap into millennial angst and explore the trials and tribulations of being in one’s thirties. While not explicitly R-rated, this project aims to capture the disillusionment experienced by a generation that grew up with the lovable purple dinosaur.
McKeon emphasized that the film is not intended for children, stating, “We’re leaning into the millennial angst of the property rather than fine-tuning this for kids.” The decision to focus on the adult perspective underscores Mattel’s desire to push boundaries and create thought-provoking content. With Daniel Kaluuya’s involvement and the influence of visionary filmmakers, fans can anticipate a surreal and thought-provoking take on Barney, offering a fresh perspective on the popular childhood character.
