James Gunn has chosen David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan to star as Superman/Clark Kent and Lois Lane, respectively, in the upcoming film “Superman: Legacy.” The movie will serve as the launch of DC’s new universe under Gunn and his DC Studios co-boss, Peter Safran. Corenswet and Brosnahan were selected after competing against four other actors for the lead roles. Gunn filmed screen tests with the contenders, including Nicholas Hoult, Tom Brittney, Emma Mackey, and Phoebe Dynevor.

The role of Superman carries significant weight and expectations, as it marks a reinvention of the character within DC’s cinematic universe. Previous actors who portrayed Superman on the big screen include Christopher Reeve, Brandon Routh, and Henry Cavill. Gunn and Safran aim to revamp DC with a younger Superman, and “Superman: Legacy” is scheduled for release on July 11, 2025.

David Corenswet, known for his roles in Ryan Murphy’s series “The Politician” and the Netflix series “Hollywood,” will experience a significant career shift as he takes on the iconic role of Superman. Rachel Brosnahan, an Emmy and Golden Globe winner for her performance in “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” will portray Lois Lane. Previous actresses who portrayed Lois Lane in film include Margot Kidder, Kate Bosworth, and Amy Adams.

Gunn expressed a personal connection to Superman, emphasizing that he relates to the character as an outsider who feels like an alien but also an ultimate insider due to being Superman himself. “Superman: Legacy” will be the first film fully produced under Gunn and Safran’s tenure, following their appointment to revamp DC.
