Internal emails have revealed that Microsoft once considered acquiring Sega and Bungie. The emails, which were sent by Xbox chief Phil Spencer to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, show that Spencer was interested in both companies for their respective strengths in the gaming industry.

Sega is a Japanese company that is known for its popular video game franchises, such as Sonic the Hedgehog and Persona. Bungie is an American company that is best known for developing the Halo series.

In the emails, Spencer argued that acquiring Sega would give Microsoft a “broader portfolio of IP” and “deeper access to the Japanese market.” He also said that acquiring Bungie would “strengthen our first-party development capabilities” and “give us a foothold in the live service space.”

Ultimately, Microsoft did not acquire either Sega or Bungie. However, the emails show that the company was once interested in expanding its gaming portfolio through acquisitions.

It is interesting to speculate on what might have happened if Microsoft had acquired Sega or Bungie. Sega could have given Microsoft a much stronger presence in the Japanese market, while Bungie could have helped Microsoft to compete more effectively in the live service space.

Of course, there is no guarantee that either acquisition would have been successful. However, it is clear that Microsoft was once considering expanding its gaming portfolio through acquisitions. It will be interesting to see if the company makes any more moves in this direction in the future.
