Adult Swim has released the first trailer for Metalocalypse: Army of the Doomstar, the long-awaited animated film that will serve as a finale to the cult-favorite series.
Created by Brendon Small and Tommy Blacha, Metalocalypse premiered on Adult Swim in 2006. The story followed Dethklok, a death metal band who, despite the imbecilic nature of its members, was ludicrously successful, culturally influential and at the center of a prophesied world-shattering event. The series aired 60 eleven-minute episodes across four seasons, culminating in an hour-long rock opera special, The Doomstar Requiem. However, after the special aired in 2013, Adult Swim declined to greenlight a fifth season and Metalocalypse was canceled.
Small continued to campaign to give Metalocalypse a proper finale. In 2021, it was announced that the series, alongside other Adult Swim favorites Aqua Teen Hunger Force and The Venture Bros., would get their own films, with the Metalocalypse and Venture movies serving as finales to the canceled series.
