Disney’s new trading card game, Lorcana, is set to release in September 2023. The game features alternate versions of Disney characters and an “overarching storyline” set in the mystical world of Lorcana. The game is being produced by Ravensburger, a German game and toy company that was founded in 1883. While the game will focus on storytelling to encourage beginners, it will still offer plenty of strategic elements for veteran TCG players. Disney Lorcana will be a family-friendly game full of classic depictions of Disney’s best-known characters, along with several updated, “reimagined” versions. The game will feature four set releases each year that will expand the game.
Upper Deck, a trading card game company, is suing Ravensburger and Ryan Miller over their new Disney trading card game, Lorcana. Upper Deck claims that the idea for Lorcana was based on their work and was allegedly copied by a former employee. The lawsuit alleges that Ryan Miller copied Upper Deck’s game idea and turned it into Lorcana. Upper Deck President Jason Masherah said, “We invested significant time and resources to develop a new and novel trading card game.” The lawsuit is seeking an injunction to prevent the release of Lorcana and unspecified damages. Dicebreaker has contacted Upper Deck to clarify what has reportedly been stolen from its original TCG.
