Writers Express Disappointment with Directors Guild’s Deal, WGA Strike Continues

Writers Guild of America (WGA) members expressed their disappointment with a recent deal negotiated between the Directors Guild of America (DGA) and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). Screenwriters took to social media to criticize the deal, which addressed issues such as the use of AI, streaming transparency, and wage increases. Some writers felt that the deal did not meet their needs and accused the DGA of aligning with the AMPTP’s agenda instead of supporting the WGA’s efforts for a more comprehensive agreement. The WGA congratulated the DGA on their deal but refrained from further comment until the contract language is known. The three-year deal, if approved, would prevent a strike by Hollywood directors as their standard contracts approach expiration. However, other unions, such as SAG-AFTRA representing actors, also have contracts expiring soon and may authorize a strike. The ongoing WGA strike, which started in May, focuses on wages, AI usage, and employment requirements. The strike has led to the postponement of various high-profile TV and film projects, causing significant economic losses in California’s film industry and related businesses.

Studio Ghibli has announced that it will not release any trailers or promotional materials for Hayao Miyazaki’s final film, “How Do You Live?” ahead of its release in Japan on July 14. The highly anticipated movie remains shrouded in mystery, with minimal information available about the plot, voice cast, or setting. Toshio Suzuki, Ghibli’s lead producer, stated in an interview that no further details will be revealed before the film’s theatrical debut. This decision aligns with Ghibli’s tradition of prioritizing the pure experience of its works and avoiding excessive commercialization. Suzuki contrasted their approach with Hollywood’s typical marketing methods, emphasizing the desire to offer a different moviegoing experience.
