Euphoria actor Sydney Sweeney has recently confirmed her role as Julia Carpenter in the upcoming Sony/Marvel movie Madame Web. In an interview with Total Film, Sweeney expressed her excitement about portraying the second Spider-Woman in this highly anticipated superhero film.
Julia Carpenter, originally created by Jim Shooter and Mike Zeck, made her first appearance as Spider-Woman in 1984’s Secret Wars #6. She later took on the identity of Arachne in Ms. Marvel in 2006 before eventually becoming Madame Web in Amazing Spider-Man #637 in 2010. This upcoming movie will mark the character’s live-action debut, although she has previously appeared in animated series such as Iron Man and Ultimate Spider-Man.

While plot details for Madame Web remain scarce, fans can expect the film to serve as an origin story for the clairvoyant character. Madame Web possesses psychic abilities that allow her to see within the spider world itself. Alongside Sweeney, the star-studded cast includes Dakota Johnson in the titular role, Isabela Merced, Celeste O’Connor, Tahar Rahim, Emma Roberts, Mike Epps, Adam Scott, and Zosia Mamet. Sweeney expressed her enthusiasm for working with her co-stars, particularly the powerhouse of badass females, Dakota, Isabela, and Celeste, with whom she had a fantastic time filming.
Madame Web is part of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU), a series of live-action Marvel spinoff films focused on Spider-Man’s adversaries and supporting characters. The SSU began with Venom in 2018, followed by Venom: Let There Be Carnage in 2021 and Morbius in 2022. The next installment, Kraven the Hunter starring Aaron Taylor Johnson, is set to release in October 2023.
Following Kraven the Hunter, the film El Muerto, featuring actor/rapper Bad Bunny, is scheduled for a January 2024 release. However, since the movie is still in the development phase and has not yet entered production, there are concerns among fans and insiders that it may face delays. El Muerto centers around an obscure Spider-Man villain and masked wrestler who gains superpowers from his mystical face-covering.
Madame Web’s principal photography began in July and concluded in January 2023. Directed by S. J. Clarkson, known for her work on Netflix/Marvel series Jessica Jones and The Defenders, the film was written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless.
Fans can anticipate the release of Madame Web in theaters on February 16, 2024.
